Steady My Heart

Recently, I received a picture of a beautiful dog who had passed away. Before the call, I heard spirit say to me to … ‘Steady my heart.’

Sometimes people ask me what I do and why do I call myself an ‘Animal Medium’. Growing up in a religious Christian family, I’ve always had two-way conversations with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, and, I’ve always felt guided by God to take certain actions, even when I didn’t understand why or was feeling a little fearful or shy.

When I was a teenager in church, the pastor surprised several of the youth one night by asking us to take part in various aspects of the service. I can’t tell you how shocked I was when he asked me to deliver the sermon. I had no idea what to say, but I asked for divine assistance, and I remember the words just flowed out of my mouth.

When I was 19 years old, I recall, sitting in my car at parking lot with tears rolling down my face, begging God to tell me what I was supposed to do with my life. I heard the voice of God answer me, ‘Sandra … (I was so excited that I would finally know from God what my life’s mission and purpose was to be.) ‘Sandra … I want you to do what you want to do.’ At first, I felt so disappointed because I thought God would tell me so I could follow his will for my life. Years later, I came to understand that our guidance and our life calling is within us. When we live in alignment with what brings us joy, we are following our very own pre-birth plan.

All my life, I’ve found that people and animals seem to be drawn to me. Complete strangers would often tell me their life stories. Once I felt God suggest I go sit quietly beside a woman in church. I didn’t know why. Her husband had been outside and came back into the church to tell her to hurry up, so they could leave. At first, I felt let down because I thought she would leave, and I didn’t know why I was told to sit beside her. But then, she turned to me and began to pour her heart out about the difficulties she was experiencing in life. And so, I listened, deeply, knowing I was in the right place, at the right time. Do you sometimes think there’s too much talking in this world? And who’s really listening?

When I chose to go back to the University to get my master’s degree in counseling, and while I was spending weekends learning how to be a Life Coach, someone invited me to take classes in animal communication. Because I love animals, it felt like it was the right thing to do. Immediately, it felt natural to listen to animals and to talk with them.

In the classes, we talked with both live animals and used pictures of other animals. Amazingly, when I consciously chose to communicate with them, they had a lot to say. I had two dogs of my own in the class. One wanted to know if we could get ice cream on our way home. The other dog, Buddy, started teaching me about the ways of the Universe, including how I could talk with any animal, if given permission, anywhere in the world. Throughout the years, my intuitive skills have expanded. Having been a teacher in my earlier life, it felt natural to create an approach to animal communication that I could share with others.

So, what is a Medium?  In communication, it is ‘A method, channel, or system used to share information.’ Think of someone who does sign language. They are the ‘medium’ or channel between those who speak and those who are deaf.

It’s my belief that all souls are eternal. And even though these souls aren’t in physical form, they do live on. And they love those of us who are still here. In the religion I grew up in, the ministers spoke against channeling and mediumship, so it was scary for me at first to call myself an Animal Medium. But at the same time, I think in some way, I’d been practicing it my whole life while I was communicating with God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the Archangels. I now feel like I was (and am) using my God-given intuitive gifts to receive clear messages.

What if our connection to the Divine is as natural as breathing? I think it is, but I think we need to remember that it is. So, as I begin a session with my clients and especially if they are calling because they had to say goodbye to one of their beloved animal companions, I take a moment to get centered through a simple invocation to make sure that our shared time together is of and for the highest and best good. In my client’s deepest time of hurt, loss and grief, that’s when I listen to what that departed loving soul wants to share with their beloved human companion. I stand in our shared energy field, in the middle, as a channel, a medium to receive and share messages of love from those who are no longer in physical form, yet, very much alive in spirit.

And sometimes, I hear the divine preparing and telling me to … ‘Steady My Heart.’
